This is true, and it bugs me. I wish it didn't work this way but it does. I'm always quoting Nora Roberts about writing - her professionalism, her clear-eyed view of the business end of publishing, impresses me. I love her maxims about "There is no muse, there is only the job" and "Butt in chair, hands on keyboard." But the fact is that very often, I can't come up with what happens next until I, like, come up with what happens next. I can't force it. It's a very inefficient way to work.

Over my 20 years of various fandom, I've seen this comment made by writers repeatedly: characters often drag the author places originally unintended. If you have good, strong characters (quality wise, not morally) then it is almost that you discover the story, rather than create it.

After extensive research - yes, I re-read all 3 stories, someone had too ;) - I can tell you without a doubt, you did not give Cade or Ally a middle name.

Glad to be a help. Good luck on your current projects!

Was stressed, knackered and a little drunk by the time I finished in the wee hours

Yep, that's definitely familiar. What do you do, Claire? I may have asked before but I don't remember...

I think the issue for me has to be about what is best for the poor kids involved in these cases. While the adults can argue the toss about consent & each others motivations, the fact is that regardless of the decisions taken to get to that point, there is an innocent party in all this.
Do some women lie, cheat, manipulate men and 'the system' to get what they want - absolutely. Do some men walk away from their kids with their hands in the air and claim if women want 'equality' then they should just get on with things themselves or simply refuse to support their kids - certainly.
For me, these people just demonstrate the worst of human nature.
I think there has to be balance in our society, and on the whole, asking both parties to take financial and moral responsibility for the kids they have is the right thing to do. As always, there will be people who manipuate this for their own ends. But the alternatives for me are more dangerous overall - allowing men to have a deciding vote in a womans decision to abortion; forcing women to have to be the only party with consequences when accidents happen;' allowing kids to live in poverty because they are not getting financial support - these are worse for us as individuals and society as a whole. So sometimes do we have to do what we think is right overall and accept that the law of averages says we will help more than we hurt???
