First of all, don’t do it. Just buy the damn thing.
But if you still feel like you need to do it yourself, don’t use poly satin, no matter how much your little girl says, “Please Mommy! It’s so pretty and shiny and it feels so soft…look at it! It matches my room colors perfectly!”
Don’t give in. Use cotton or flannel or knits. Sewing with poly satin for a garment is one thing, but a comforter cover is just too damn big. You’ll have to sew panels on both sides (top and bottom) and besides, the material is so slippery that it’s really hard to lay out and cut accurately. The layout is the problem–your sewing table will likely be too small to lay the whole thing out. Maybe you can just lay it out on the floor. But poly satin is very slippery and billowly, and laying it out on the floor doesn’t make it any better.
If you feel like you just have to do it, use fusable interfacing – and decide to use fusable interfacing BEFORE you start sewing the panels together.
If you have to use panels for both sides – i.e., the material isn’t wide enough to make one piece for the top and one for the bottom – it’s great to have a sewing machine with decorative stitch capabilities to run over the panel seams.
Finally – and I should have put this at the beginning of the post, but I saved it for last because I didn’t freaking think of it until my sister in law mentioned it — don’t use poly satin if you have dogs that like to hang out on their little girl’s bed. You would think that a reasonably intelligent person like me would think of this but no, I was almost done with the damn thing…I will post pictures if I actually finish it.
